"Facing the Storm" Annual Award Honoring Female Humanitarians
The award will be given each year in Sept. to a woman born after 1899 who was a humanitarian and worked to help others and to better our community.
2016 Humanitarian Award
MARY EWING 1906 – 2001
Mary Ewing was a business leader, community activist and great humanitarian. She gave much of her time and resources to better the lives of others and is remembered for her gentle manner and kindness. Her local involvements included: Founding Member of the Advisory Committee of Girl Scouts; Board Member of the Home for the Aging of PEO; Board Member of the McDonough County Heart Association, McDonough County Tuberculosis Association, McDonough County Welfare Services Committee, and Wesley Village; Advisory Board of the Salvation Army of Macomb; Illinois Advisory Council of Small Business Administration; and Co-Chaired the 1982 United Way Campaign. Mary distinguished herself nationally as a delegate to the White House Conference on Children and Youth, and co-founded the National Association of Banking Women.
She held membership and supported the following Macomb Clubs: Macomb Beautiful Association; Altrusa (Charter Member); American Association of University Women; P.E.O.; American Legion Auxiliary; Business and Professional Women; Fortnightly; League of Women Voters; McDonough County Historical Society; War Dads Auxiliary; XXMD Club; McDonough District Hospital Auxiliary; and Delta Delta Delta Sorority. Mary and her husband funded a scholarship at Western Illinois University and aided the Western Illinois University Museum.
